I've studied this a lot in my media studies classes and I have to blame the media because that's what's been drilled in my head, and it's not just the average every day US citizen that is having issues with their bodies because of the media, it's also the celebrities that feel the pressure to be thin everyday.
Look at all the hell Jennifer Love Hewitt caught because of her less than perfect figure she showed off in a bikini one day; now she's out there trying to loose weight, and she claims all the criticism she caught for those photos is not the reason she's doing it.
With regards to the article, Marilyn Monroe was something like a size 14, and she was considered beautiful. These days a size 14 is considered overweight and in the eyes of a lot of men, fat.
